Gibellina Nuova, a small Sicilian town in the province of Trapani, swept away by the earthquake in the Belice Valley in 1968 was reborn, driven by the artistic vision of Ludovico Corrao, the town's mayor at the time.
The reconstruction of Gibellina represents the first and largest public/urban art project in Italy, a unique case in the world where art, through a strong cultural drive, the commitment of the mayor, the generosity of the artists and the work of the citizens, has been able to shape a new identity for these places.
The artists who responded to the mayor's call were excellencies such as Pietro Consagra and Alberto Burri, Mario Schifano, Andrea Cascella, Arnaldo Pomodoro, Mimmo Paladino, Franco Angeli and Leonardo Sciascia, who transformed the city into a great laboratory of artistic and cultural experimentation and planning.
For this editorial I have focused on the two works of art that most characterise Gibellina Burri's Cretto, the largest work of Land Art ever made, a concrete casting that traces through fractures the old streets of the town destroyed by the earthquake, and the Chiesa Madre by Ludovico Quaroni whose symbolic and geometric centre of the monument is a large, smooth, concrete sphere that constitutes a precise reference of the sacred.
Arno and Ghedea are the starring of this sentimental journey into art and silence. An almost surreal suggestion that I wanted to tell through my shots.
The suppliers who welcomed and enthusiastically shared the project are Creamano who reproduced a portion of the Cretto with a minimal and refined 3D layering, Francesco Carofiglio's poetry seemed in perfect harmony with the geometries of Gibellina, as did Manuganda's sculptural jewellery and the groom's stunning floral attire from the Arno Ende private collection.
The bride wore two stunning outfits: the first with a Tarifa dress by Cartabranca and the wonderful net veil that I loved more than any other and a Matisse blue satin slingback. The second with a full blouse and wide skirt by Cortana Bride and a soft veil with embroidered flowers worn as a sash, lace sleeves, black stocking and ivory leather slingback.
