Don’t be a tourist in London. A tale of 4 neighbourhoods

Don’t be a tourist in London. A tale of 4 neighbourhoods

Don't merely be a tourist; be an explorer. After years of travelling and organising trips for others, I've come to learn that the true essence of travel lies in immersing oneself in a city—feeling its rhythm, understanding its history, culture, customs, and even its peculiar quirks.

London, however, presents a unique challenge. It is a vast and incredibly diverse city, where the concept of a "typical" Londoner doesn't truly exist. This is likely the very reason why even the most seasoned traveller, someone who truly appreciates the art of exploration, keeps returning to London time and time again. I continue to be amazed by this city, not because it possesses a singular personality, but because it boasts an array of those.

And who better to guide you through these diverse personalities than the locals who embody them?

East London

Take Felix, for instance. He is your quintessential East Londoner, residing near Victoria Park. No one knows the ins and outs of this area better than him. Felix is undeniably hip, and deeply ethical, boasting an impressive vinyl collection, always carrying a tote bag, supporting British farmers by consuming local produce, and relishing the vibrant atmosphere of underground bars. He can be summed up with three "V's": vegan, vintage, and vocal.

So, where can you find Felix? You might spot him at the Victoria Park Farmers Market on Sundays, browsing for plants at Conservatory Archives on Hackney Road, enjoying a pint at the Forest Road Brewing Co. Taproom & Bar, attending the opening of a new exhibition at the Victoria Miro Gallery, savouring a freshly baked loaf from E5 Bakehouse, hunting for another vinyl gem at Stranger Than Paradise Records, indulging in an artisan cup of ethically sourced coffee at Pophams in London Fields, and on special occasions, treating himself to a set meal at Bistrotheque. If you resonate with Felix's vibe and the Victoria Park area, I highly recommend following his tips to fully immerse yourself in the wonders of East London.

Richmond

Now, let's meet Sophie and Leo, a young married couple with a delightful 2-year-old. They recently purchased a charming 2-bedroom house in Richmond, offering a picturesque view of the River Thames. Their lifestyle revolves around gardening, indulging in leisurely walks, and actively participating in their community. While they prioritise their connection with nature, they also appreciate the finer things in life. Gardening, taking leisurely walks, boating, sourcing organic groceries; a local, beige and floral, candlelit meal in the company of friends at a local restaurant – some of the things they consider to be perfect. But above all, of course, is family.

During weekends, they often take strolls along Richmond Riverside, enjoy picnics near the ponds in Richmond Park (where their little one took their first steps toward the area’s famous deers), and frequently visit Ham House for a dose of culture and history. They proudly belong to the Richmond Canoe Club and their grocery shopping is exclusively done at The Fat Badger and Whole Foods.

Petersham Nurseries is their go-to destination for pretty much everything – from bouquet-making classes to discovering new tableware or indulging in a set menu dinner with friends. If you find yourself resonating with Sophie and Leo's description, sharing their close-to-nature attitude, passion for sports, appreciation for history, and long walks, I wholeheartedly recommend following in their footsteps and exploring the beautiful Richmond area.

Barbican

Allow me to introduce Alison, a 37-year-old architect with a passion for her field and 20th-century art. One might even label her “geeky” when it comes to those interests. Whenever Alison notices a beautiful material, she touches it. Whenever she comes across a stunning building, she eagerly sketches it. People-watching, posters, plants, and post-modernism are some of her other great interests. Alison has an insatiable appetite for reading, enjoys alternative cinema, and finds solace in knitting and classical music.

Alison's idea of a perfect evening involves catching an indie film at the Barbican cinema, sipping a "Brutalist" cocktail at the Martini bar, and strolling through the southern part of the estate, which she refers to as the concrete jungle. Every Sunday, you'll find her leisurely strolling through the Barbican Conservatory and visiting a new exhibition at either the Curve or the Barbican Art Gallery. Although she knows the Barbican shop from A to Z, when wanting to surprise her, you can't go wrong with a gift from there. On the rare occasions when she ventures beyond the Barbican walls, it's to enjoy a cup of truly good coffee at Redemption Roasters or Rosslyn or to read a book at St Dunstan in the East, which is conveniently within walking distance.

Alison's passion for Barbican architecture led her to become one of its guides, after taking the Barbican Architecture tour ten times and realising she could do it justice herself. She also attends numerous lectures at the Barbican Centre as a fun evening activity. Fortunately, everything she values most is within proximity – from London Symphony Orchestra recitals and the library to access to majestic architecture that you can never stop exploring – all "inside the walls" of the Barbican.

If you share Alison's academic, educated, artistic, and alternative interests, the Barbican should undoubtedly be one of the most important stops on your London trip. Despite not being a separate area, it certainly feels like its own distinct and remarkable world.

Mayfair

Let's meet Robert, the resident of Mayfair. Robert is a well-off individual, and his interests align with his social standing and means. He may come across as a little snobbish, but he is undoubtedly a true hedonist. He has a keen eye for good design, particularly when it combines historic and traditional elements with a modern twist. Robert is a passionate foodie, and he fully embraces the culture of members-only clubs. For him, there is no better way to spend his day than indulging in shopping, hopping into a luxurious black cab or Uber to visit a fancy coffee shop or his trusted local tailor, and then meeting a group of friends for a leisurely and exquisite meal accompanied by a proper bottle of wine.

Robert gravitates toward the elegant bars of London's old luxury establishments. Here, he engages in conversations about politics, shares stories of his recent travels, and discusses the amazing food combinations he has savoured. You might spot him during one of his daily coffee runs in the Mayfair area, frequenting The Gentlemen Baristas Mayfair, Ralph's Coffee, or The Service.

For dinner, he enjoys dining at renowned establishments like Cipriani, Amazonico, Langan's Brasserie, or Hide. When it comes to enjoying a drink, you might find him at Le Magritte Bar or at The Connaught. On a night out, he relishes the vibrant atmosphere of The Maine. Robert's shopping preferences lean towards New Bond Street, Burlington Arcade, and Savile Row, while he also appreciates attending art events at Sotheby's, the annual PAD fair, and the small galleries on Old Burlington Street.

Robert appreciates the finer things in life, however, does not shy away from the simpler things in life, like taking leisurely walks along the streets and squares of Mayfair, admiring the beautifully decorated shopfronts for any occasion. But his true sanctuary lies in the private members' clubs, where he can network and quietly savour life with a fancy drink in hand. If Robert's affinity for luxury, fine dining, and exclusive establishments resonates with you, exploring Mayfair should be at the top of your London itinerary.
